Coutada Velha 2018

Imagine walking through a vineyard in Alentejo. Imagine the breeze gently rustling the vines, green and full as they grow in the Portugese sunshine. Rows upon rows of vineyards drinking in the sun and the softness of the summer breeze.

In the distance the winemaker checks the grapes, are they ready? He wonders to himself. He pushes a grape between his fingers and lets the scent rise into his nose. Almost time, he thinks to himself. This is where the wine is made.

And this is how Coutada Velha 2018 made me feel. Warm, sensual, ready. It felt full of love and so I wrote a little love story, This Wine Needs a label. Read it here.

The Wine

This rich dry structured red Portuguese wine from the Alentejo region is full of dark ripe fruit on the nose.  The palate confirms flavours of blackberry jam, soft floral notes, and rich earthy soil.  It does well with a few moments to breathe gently.

Interesting to note that this blend includes Trincadeira which is the same grape as Tinta Amarela used to make Port.  Therefore, giving this wine its rich deep red colour from the dark skins.
